In November of 2018, the Shrine broke ground for the 20 metre crucifix project. The vision of this project is to create a place for pilgrimage, a place for private and contemplative prayer, and an outdoor altar area for celebration of the most Holy Eucharist. Phase 1: The Crucifix In 2016, work began on the corpus, which is the solitary work of an artist in Kuwinda, who labored on this corpus for over 2 years. In 2017, the Architectural Concept Design of the project was completed and submitted to council for construction approval. Finally in November 2018, the project team were ready to break ground for the first phase of the project - the erection of the Cross.
Phase 2: The Podium The second phase of the project is the construction of the podium, the area at the foot of the cross which will be an altar area or santuary. The foot of the cross will contain confessional rooms, designed and set aside for the celebration of the Sacrament of Penance.
The community of the Shrine has over the past 3 years raised money to help realize this project. Currently, the project is in Phase 2 and the community is pushing to realize the completion of Phase 2.
Phase 3: Beautification Phase 3 of the project will involve the beautification of the project - final finishing of the podium, fencing of the area, construction of the confessional rooms at the foot of the cross, landscaping, water fountain installation, sound and lighting installation, installation of wrought iron banisters and details, and finally installation of the altar.
